Wheel Hub and Axle Replacement

We are currently working on restoring a 1970 Late Series IIa. The current project is replacing the axles and wheel hubs. Here’s a photo of a hub and axle that were replaced as well as the hardware.

  • 1.       All 4 corners  were inspected, a hub seal has leaked 90wt onto the shoes and rear shoes are too thin for our comfort.  a complete brake job needed with a thorough inspection of all the hardware.
  • 2.       All 4 corners stripped to the backing plate  with all three flex lines  inspected for integrity, all the hardware (springs, anchors) need to be replaced, all the wheel cylinders and a complete  brake fluid flush will be done
  • 3.       Inspection finds that the hub assemblies will need to be replaced; the right front axle will need to be replaced due to rust at the splined hub end.
  • 4.       All the new components were prepped and painted.

    The axle looks fabulous.

What make of wheel hub and stub axle did you use? I used Britpart hubs, stubs and drive flanges last year on my wifes 109″ and to be fair they were fine despite problems with other components I’ve had from them but curious to know which other manufacturers are available as I have the same job to do on my own vehicle later this year.

Wow, do you have a secret stockpile of genuine parts somewhere? 😉

I couldn’t see any genuine parts listed anywhere in the UK for those other than for ridiculous prices. In all honesty the after market parts I bought were perfectly well machined (I ran verniers over them and compared to original), they assembled fine and have done 8K trouble free miles so far and they cost a fraction of the price, in fact approx 1/5th the cost of the genuine ones I could find.
